Pursuing Righteousness means what exactly? I understand that righteousness is a good thing, but how good and how deep does it actually go? I say “be righteous”, because God is righteous and we are meant to pursue righteousness. So to better understand what exactly Righteousness means, I’ll be doing a study on what it means, what it looks like and how it feels. By definition the word Righteous mean “Acting in accordance with divine or moral law: free from guilt and sin” seems pretty simple right? How do you obtain to that standard though?
You can’t have true Righteousness unless you serve God with all of your Heart! In Romans 3:10 it states “There is none righteous, no, not one.” A unrighteous man does not have the fear of God, even though they might be righteous in the worlds eyes. I guess you could call that a fools righteousness. Romans 3:22 says “This Righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all and upon all who believe, for there is no distinction.” “You can’t be free from sin until you come to Jesus with a broken heart and a contrite spirit” Psalms 51:17 That’s to come to the realization that you are burdened with guilt and sin and you need Jesus to take it away. Then you must seek God with everything that is within you. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2nd Timothy 3:16-17. “A wise son heeds his father’s instruction but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.” Proverbs 13:1 Be like a wise man and take the rebuke and repent of what it was you were rebuked for. Don’t be a scoffer.
Before you are righteous you are a sinner full of shame and guilt, It’s not until you come to Jesus with a broken heart and contrite spirit that you can start to become righteous. How do we learn about righteousness, through the Living Word of God, studying to show ourselves approved, and by letting it teach us, by letting it correct us. “For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.” Romans 6:20 “And having been freed from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness.” Romans 6:18… We are called to be slaves for righteousness sake, if we are not, we are still sinning and no righteousness is found in us. “In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death.” Proverbs 12:28 If you have righteousness, you have life, you have Jesus.
